Owned and That Other Thing
Last night, the Jays were owned. Straight up. Good hitting will get stopped by good pitching every time. Baby Weave brought his game and Aaron Hill was the only one who could man up to him. Doesn't mean it wasn't ugly to watch.
As for the other thing,
I still love him...this one hurt because this is the first guy caught that I actually like. I read a GQ profile of him a few years ago and he seemed so damn loveable. (I can't find it online, but here is a link to the New Yorker profile that features a lot of the same stuff.) He is unique and is himself in a way most people don't have the courage to be. Manny is also a sick, sick hitter.
And cold hard cash is the only reason the Jays weren't interested. Also, to be lawyer-ly for a second, Jamie Campbell reported that MR tested positive for a PED. That actually isn't true. He tested positive for a banned substance. Not all banned substances are PEDs. Marijuana and heroin are on the list, but if you smoke/shoot up before playing, I'm not sure your game is enhanced. There, the defense rests.
My favourite thing to come out of this was Manny's biographer thinking it was the chronic that got him suspended and being shocked (shocked!) when it wasn't.
This is a good read.
From a Boston paper, no less. Better than that dreck by Bill Simmons on ESPN. The "think of the children" angle is rarely good and usually annoying.
Wouldn't it be great if ballplayers today looked like this? He'll score some runs and help you with your calculus homework!!
