Pathetic AND Embarassing
Miracle of miracles. Joe West and I agree on something. The Yankees and Red Sox take too damn long to play. I've noticed it in the past more with the Sox (Pukelis and his 10 000 practice swings come to mind.) The Yankees tend to grind out at bats, but either way, it's tedious as fuck to watch. It makes me long for the Pedro/Rocket plunks-ahoy days of the early 2000s.
Apparently the league has been encouraging umpires to tell the batters and pitchers to pick up their pace and enforce it with stopwatches, fines and floggings. And Joe West, crew chief of the opening series between New York and Boston, had some things to say. Now Joe of Many Chins and I have rarely agreed. He's actually one of the umpires I've made note of. It's my contention that we should never be aware of an umpire's name during the game. If we are, it means they have played favourites or made assinine calls or have been generally assholish.
But Joe West calling the Yanks and Sox "pathetic and embarassing"as well as slow, well, that's a statement I can get behind. West is in a bit of trouble for his comments (Bud 'the Spud' Selig is apparently 'furious'.) Now the two teams can claim bias against them. And after years of bias for them, it would be so hard for them to play.
In other news, good God damn, Vernon Wells.
