So It Begins
Well, Marco. You were great for us and blossomed into a very productive everyday player. You were also fun to use for bits with Latin macho stereotypes. I love the vowel sounds of your name and I'm sad we never used you to get the crazy WBC Venezualan crowd to Jays games.
Lo siento pero ahora tengo que odiarte.
On another note: This is a few weeks old but I've been thinking about Brian Burke's gay son. First off, yay for supporting him. And yay to the hockey players who said that they would accept a gay teammate, even though they blushed while they said it. And I totally don't believe them, but it was a nice sentiment.
Jeff Blair wrote an interesting article about gay athletes. In it, he said that someone like Jackie Robinson faced more of a battle because he couldn't hide his difference. I'm going to have to disagree. First off, sexuality, especially when you see people pretty much every day for 7 months, is often really hard to hide. Second, the price one pays for hiding an essential truth about oneself can be a destructive force. The fear of being found out and shamed alone is a huge weight to carry.
