Junior Finally Takes the Derby Crown
The Homerun Derby is a silly event, as are most events involving feats of strength with no purpose.
Julio Rodriguez dazzled the hometown crowd with 41 homers in the first round. Seattle legend Ken Griffey Jr. was there to crown the winner.
And Vlad Jr., who lost in 2019 despite hitting 91 homers in roughly an hour, took the crown.
Guerrero seemed to be having an absolute ball, but there was a strange general vibe from the ESPN broadcast. It was as if he was some uninvited interloper not worthy of the company. It was downright hostile, and I don’t understand it. Guerrero appears to have a good time, he’s the child of a legendary baseball player who is generally well-respected, and he hits a lot of homers.
I doubted Vlad in the final round because he didn’t get a break between the second round and the final round. But clearly, it was some kind of groove.
