Tidy Little Sweep: Sanchez, Stroman (and Russell's Knee)
That was a tidy little two game sweep in the desert.
Aaron Sanchez pitched like the boss he is, further complicating the decision the Blue Jays will have to make regarding whether Sanchez (arguably their best starter) should be moved to the 'pen.
Sanchez credited his fastball command for his successful outing to MLB.com:
What the Jays are going to do is still a hot topic. Sanchez looks very comfortable on the mound- his velocity remains steady and his mechanics to produce that velocity appear smooth and free. It's an easy 96 mph.
The secret to arm health is one of the most debated issue in baseball today and there are no easy or clear answers. This isn't going to go away soon. People will be able to scream about it on sports talk radio for months to come.
Edwin Encarnacion continued his assault on Chase Field with monster homers in both games.
His 471 bomb on Wednesday, the longest he's hit this season, was in support of Marcus Stroman.
Stroman had a bounce back start after the rather catastrophic start versus the A's.
Here he is talking to Hazel Mae about getting back into a routine post All Star Break and his friendship with Sanchez.
I've long had a theory that baseball players get into all sorts of trouble when they have time off.
Russell Martin proved that on Thursday. The Jays flew in to Toronto Wednesday night and had on off day.
Kevin Pillar went sailing on Lake Ontario with his family.
Marcus Stroman and some buddies (plus Sanchez) went to Canada's Wonderland.
Russell Martin spent too much time in the sauna, passed out in the shower and woke up wrapped up in the shower curtain. He hurt his knee and will likely be out until Sunday.
Martin describes having low blood sugar, feeling woozy in the sauna and getting into a cold shower.
Well, that is quite the image. Here is the story in more detail:
Awkwardness about naked strangers? Baseball players: they are just like us.
I've fainted several times in my life. I've done it because I was hungry, from injuring myself, from trying (and failing) to donate blood, from being in a heat wave and from having naturally low blood pressure. Martin's combo of not eating and also hanging out in a hot place for too long sounds familiar.
It's very strange feeling- like you are exiting your body or falling asleep. And it's exhausting. I've been lucky enough to have not whacked my head (one guy actually caught me.) And I'm glad Martin's head is ok, too.
