Vernon Wells : Traded Man
What the hell kind of black magic, voodoo shit is Alex Anthopolous involved in? To unload the so-called worst contract in the history of contracts? Napoli + Rivera to Jays for Vernon Wells.
While this is most likely a great deal, business-wise, I still feel more than a little gutted. Vernon Wells seemed like a life long Jay, both because he's been a Jay for 12 years and because that mammoth contract made it seem like he was an irrefutable fact.
Wells' walk off home run against Mariano Rivera on July 20, 2006 was probably his best single moment as a Jay. I was at the game the next night, where the Jays thumped the Yankees, and there was significant buzz in the building. It also came the same week as the Shea Hillenbrand "ship is sinking" hullabaloo happened, so a big walkoff extra inning win in a big series against the Yankees was important for team morale.
Wells' best season was 2003. Dubs finished the season with a .317 batting average, 33 home runs, 117 RBI and 118 runs. He led the league with 215 hits, 49 doubles, and 373 total bases and finished 8th in American League MVP voting.
As I wrote in my previous post, Vernon Wells always seemed to be a very decent man and it bothered me when people booed him.
He also has quite the sense of humour.
Cabbie: "What if people call you a pussy, because you wear batting gloves?"
Vernon: (shrugs) "I'm rich."
Sorry about the amount of Kevin Millar in that clip. But "Humping of the teammates...I wanna hump. Humping would be cool." is worth it.
Happy trails, darling...
