Vernon Wells: Talking Man
Vernon Wells talked to Richard Griffin about not being
worth his contract.
Judging by the Baseball Weekly article from last year where Vernon Wells talked extensively about God and purpose, I got the sense he is a very consiensious man. "I'm not worth that contract" means "I'm not worth it because no one is." It doesn't mean "I'm not worth that contract because I suck. No one should come to the ballpark."
When he says the most important thing to him is to give back, he doesn't mean most important in the Vernon Wells baseball player sense, he means most important to Vernon Wells' conscience or Vernon Wells, friend of Jesus.
The members of the Toronto fan base who think Wells is lazy or lackadaisical can go fuck themselves (how's that for Christian conscientiousness?) He has a smooth swing, runs beautifully. A natural athlete. It looks easy because of that. It looks like he isn't trying. Wells messes up when he presses, when he puts excessive pressure on himself. He isn't the "Once more into the breach, dear friends" type.
I'm not sure Wells should be expected to be that...is it not the job of management to build a team? To consider both athletic skill and personality when determining who fits best. The kind of information an experienced scout, who understands both athletic skill and who can read people, can bring to an organization. The kind of information one can't get off a spreadsheet.
But Griffin did talk about Wells being a leader on the team, so maybe he is more of a leader than we know about. Very little is known about clubhouse dynamics, secretive boys that they are.
I think Wells made a lot of progress in 2010 and fans should start forgetting his contract. Treat it like complaining about it would be as useless as complaining about a zebra being striped. It's a fact. It's done. Let's move on.
