Te Quiero, Toronto
Something has happened. Involving the Jays. I'm not sure what it is....let me think. Oh, I got it.
We have a new manager!!!! The lucky fellow is named John Farrell. He has no managerial experience, but he was Boston's pitching coach. He has a manly jaw. Curt Schilling loves him and the whole move.
"His No. 1 asset, though, is his ability to communicate. He's confident without being arrogant, smart without sounding demeaning or superior. People still believe the best managers in the game are the best tacticians and strategists. I've never believed that. The best managers in the game, the best leaders in business, are the people who put their "players" in the best position to succeed every single day, and they communicate that."
Well, Curt, I am shocked (and slightly appalled) that I agree with you. And the Red Sox seem sort of bereft over this loss. Except a few Massholes who blame Farrell because their pitching sort of sucked for them. I do this a lot, but OMG, shut up, Massholes. As if Farrell should be held responsible for Lackey's mouth breathing suckage, Beckett's back/fat head or Dice K's dithering. Plus, Farrell helped the development of Jon Lester and Clay Bucholz, two of the filthiest studs around.
So, I like this move. It just feels kind of exciting, interesting, someone new for people to complain about. All that's left is the Masshole delousing.
Also in love with Farrell? Manny Ramirez. I'm not sure how much actual coaching Farrell did with Ramirez, given that Manny isn't a pitcher, but maybe he knows Farrell from his Indian player development days. Manny has publicly come out and said "Te queiro, Toronto." I always knew Ramirez loved Toronto. The Jays were his team as a teenager because of its presence in the Dominican and because of Bell and Fernandez.
Now Manny Ramirez is a freak. I will push aside any sort salivating over the prospect of writing about his idiosyncrasies on a regular basis and consider this from the team's perspective. If he is healthy, and on the cheaper side, I say try it. 27 homers in 95 plate appearances is yummy. He might like Bautista and Toronto's low key (ie no one cares) atmosphere might work for him. Low risk, high reward. This is good, in a superficial kind of way.
And he also might be in the mood to stick it to his former team by playing for one of its rivals. And that's the sort of thing I can get behind. A motivated Manny who shares my disdain is the kind of thing I can get behind.
